Level 6 Diploma in Creative Therapeutic Practice for Children & Young People

Our Level 6 Diploma in Creative Therapeutic Practice for Children & Young People, accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Awarding Body (CPCAB), is now open for enrolment. Acceptance onto the course is subject to a short Zoom interview. This Diploma is suitable for Arts Therapists, Counsellors, and practitioners from related fields who wish to develop their creative therapeutic practice skills and support the emotional well-being of children and young people (CYP). Delivered by our team of highly skilled and experienced therapist-educators, the course runs over 11 Saturdays, including one weekend. Year 1 focuses on theory, experiential learning, and creative self-reflection. Year 2 is practice-based, with a clinical field placement under the close supervision and mentoring of one of our expert clinical supervisors, included in the course fee. Our carefully curated curriculum covers: Working safely and ethically as a practitioner Principles of therapeutic language and practice Child development, attachment, and trauma Neuroscience and safeguarding Child mental health, suicidal ideation, and self-harm Neurodivergence and working with families Supporting children and young people in school settings By integrating theory, supervised practice, and self-reflection, learners will gain the tools to design safe, creative, and responsive Tier 2 interventions, enabling CYP to access early support before issues escalate and require more intensive services. Learners will demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a theoretical essay, written case study, presentation, and the development of a self-reflective creative portfolio, all of which will be formally assessed and examined. The time commitment includes 13 training days over 12 months and approximately 16 weeks of supervised placement, plus additional independent learning and personal study — totalling around 392 learning hours across the year. Upon successful completion, learners will be awarded a Level 6 Diploma in Creative Therapeutic Practice, delivered by the Centre for Creative Therapeutic Practice and accredited by CPCAB.

Self-funded: £4,345 

Employer-funded: £4,895 

A non-refundable 10% deposit is required to secure your place, and flexible payment plans are available over 12–15 months. 

We also offer a limited number of subsidised places for participants experiencing financial barriers, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Early-bird: 10% off for bookings before 30 January 2026 (does not apply to subsidised places and course fee must be paid in full to qualify for this discount).

Foundation Skills in Creative Therapeutic Practice with Children and Young People

The Centre for Creative Therapeutic Practice is now accepting bookings for participants wishing to join the Foundation Skills in Creative Therapeutic Practice course. This course is specifically designed for adults who are working with, or wish to work with, children and young people. It is also suitable for individuals who are curious about their own creative development and wish to gain a deeper understanding of how self-expression through art can support mental health and well-being. No previous training or qualifications are required — just passion and curiosity about the role of creative therapeutic practice in promoting well-being. The course is also suitable for qualified Arts Therapists and Trainees. The Foundation Skills course offers a rich blend of short theoretical lectures, experiential learning, and group discussions. Topics include: Children’s Drawing Development Neuroscience and Creativity Developing Creativity to Support Well-being Simple Sensory and Motor Techniques Participants will be encouraged to complete 30–60 minutes of self-directed creative processing between modules to enhance their learning experience. You will need a range of art materials (a list will be provided upon sign-up), as well as a journal to support your personal creative journey. The course provides 15 CPD hours, including 12 tutored hours and 3 self-directed hours. 

To ensure a personalised learning experience, the course is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. Duration: 2 hours per week over 6 weeks

Introduction to Creative Therapeutic Life Story Work

This two-day course, facilitated by Mary Rose Brady and Dr. Patricia Watts, is designed for qualified creative therapists and professionals in related fields who work with adopted and care-experienced children and young people. According to the NICE guidelines for Looked-After Children and Young People (2021), Life Story Work is mandated by statutory guidance for all looked-after children and young people with a plan for adoption. Creative therapists play a vital role in supporting adopted and care-experienced children and young people to make sense of their life journeys within a safe, consistent, and trusting therapeutic relationship. Combining theoretical understanding with practical applications, this course equips therapists with the skills to engage meaningfully and safely in life story work, enhancing professional competence and supporting positive outcomes for children and young people. Course Content Grounded in child development, attachment theory, and neuroscience, this training will enable participants to: Understand the impact of trauma, including intergenerational trauma Recognise the significance of child development from pre-birth onwards Increase awareness of safeguarding issues and responsibilities Work effectively with the network around the child, including parents and carers Set appropriate and realistic goals for life story work Use metaphor and creativity within artwork to better understand a child or young person’s narrative Apply creative techniques to explore and capture a child’s story in a developmentally appropriate way, including experiences involving trauma Support children and young people to have agency, voice, and participation in their life story work journey Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Apply knowledge of child development, attachment, and neuroscience to inform therapeutic approaches Better understand a child’s attachment style and use this insight to guide therapeutic strategies and help them make sense of relational patterns Safely explore strategies for building a trusting therapeutic alliance and repairing ruptured attachments through creative expression Use trauma-informed practices to safely hold sensitive narratives and create regulated, supportive spaces for expression Understand the significance of traumatic prenatal experiences and early caregiving environments in shaping a child’s development.
