Discovering the Territory and Terrain of our Personal Space

Discovering the Territory and Terrain of our Personal Space:

A WholeMovement continuing education workshop in the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System

Master teachers and movement analysis training faculty Karen Studd and Cat Maguire in conjunction with Inspirees Institute are pleased to offer an opportunity to deepen foundational knowledge of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System.   As teachers of WholeMovement,  Karen and Cat have developed LBMS course work which seeks to blend theory and practice and to link personal development to professional application. As an integral part of WholeMovement and its approach to teaching they are committed to the ongoing evolution of the theory and practice of the System.

Undeniably what sets LBMS apart from other somatic practices is the aspect of Space Harmony as expressed through human movement.   In this workshop the focus will be on the Space Harmony of the geometry of the Icosahedron and the infrastructure of the Planes as a model of the mover’s personal space.

This master workshop is designed to support those with prior knowledge and experience of LBMS including those in training (or graduates from) Inspirees DMT, CM and LBMS programs. This workshop is also open for  those who have exposure to the map of Space developed by Rudolf Laban who used the forms of the Platonic Solids to identify Spatial Directions and patterns of movement along pathways through the mover’s personal space. We invite you to deepen your awareness of and appreciation for the Space we contain – our Innersphere , and the Space we are contained within – the personal space of the Kinesphere.

We are inviting all those who are seeking to refresh and renew their understanding as well as gain new insights into the Space Component of the BESS model . We will explore human capacity for 3-Dimensional movement and the expression of the pathways we choose in interacting in the environment.

Join Karen and Cat in this LBMS workshop reviewing aspects of Laban’s Space Harmony practice, primarily linked to the Spatial Form of the Icosahedron.  Over the course of this workshop we will be exploring how the theory and practice of Space Harmony can support both the observation and experience of movement in finding meaning.  And how this in turn can support optimizing the capacity of movement to serve us both functionally and expressively.

Although all aspects of the System will be touched upon, the emphasis is on the Space Component of the system and how the other BESS components can support access to Space and vice versa.
